It is always tough to decide where to take your significant other for birthday treat. If you bring him/her to the exact same place year after year, you might be perceived as a dull person. If you pick a new restaurant but it turns out to be horrible, the special day is now ruined. The art is to choose somewhere new AND somewhere you know s/he will love. That’s hell of a tough job!
In preparation of Kev’s birthday, I did a whole load of research this year. At the end, Farm on 17th Ave became the first choice!
The restaurant’s intimate, down-to-earth style dining room created the perfect atmosphere for romantic dates 🙂 Not just the atmosphere, the restaurant’s desire to source only natural, locally-sourced ingredients allows it to provide its customers the best culinary experience. The food menu might be small, but it is complemented with a unique selection of wines, beer, and bubbles that pair well with the food.
Since Kev can’t drink, we only ordered the food. As a steak lover, how could he miss out on the sirloin steak ($28)? The tender top sirloin steak was soaked in a puddle of luscious garlic jus. On the side was a mix of smooth, rich foie gras mashed potatoes, asparagus and hickory sticks. The dish was fully packed with fresh flavors! No leftovers afterwards.
My rabbit gnocchi ($25) was made up with braised rabbit, gnocchi, carrot cream, chervil puree, swiss chard and blackburn cheddar. I had never experienced braised rabbit that was so soft and aromatic. The gnocchi was unbelievably pillowy, like melted butter. Each bite surprised your taste buds- sometimes sweet, sometimes salty, sometimes aniseedy!
We ordered a side of chef’s potatoes ($7), just in case we were still hungry (which it turned out not to be a concern at all). The dish was filled with over-sized wedge potatoes, topped with cheese, bacon and green onion. It was quite greasy and of course, fattening.
I was glad we finally tried out this place. Those simple dishes bursting with fresh, authentic flavors are for every palate! It is a place to impress someone 🙂
