Calgary Restaurant: Corbeaux Bakehouse

Corbeaux, the French-inspired bakery-cafe on 17th Avenue, is a (relatively) new kid in town. I’ve visited a few times on my own over the past few months. Seattle Restaurant: La Carta de Oaxaca

Mexican food is one of the cuisines that I’ve come to like during my studies in the states. Burrito, taco and quesadilla are some of my favorite Mexican dishes. After visiting Tacos el Gordo and El Camión, I continued my search for authentic Mexican food.

As the 2012 winner of Best Mexican Restaurant in Seattle, La Carta de Oaxaca had immediately caught my attention. And since it was conveniently located in Ballard (where we spent most of our evenings), we decided to visit the place.

The restaurant was nuts at dinner hours. Inevitably, we had to wait in line before being seated. Luckily, the famous Hot Cake Molten Chocolate Cakery was just next door. To enjoy the best of both worlds and use our time effectively, we split into 2 groups – one waited for a table at La Carta de Oaxaca and one picked up the orders from the dessert store. Calgary Restaurant: Los Chilitos Taco & Tequila House

There aren’t many Mexican restaurants around in Calgary, but there is one in town that our friend said has the best fish tacos he’s ever had. Los Chilitos is hidden on the 17th ave, in between 12 and 13 st SW. In the winter, the patio is closed which makes it quite unnoticeable. When we visited this place for the first time last Friday, we were suspicious if we arrived the correct location because it looked like someone’s house from the outside. When we opened the main door and realized that it was fully packed, we knew that this is the place. We didn’t make reservation beforehand, but we were lucky that it only took us 10 minutes to get a table for 4.

The restaurant is quite small, could probably accommodate 9~10 tables of customers. The orange-painted and colorful decorations made you feel as though you were in Mexico.

It is always fun to try exotic drinks whenever we are at a place that serves foreign cuisine The mexican soda ($2.95/bottle) was artificially flavored (as you can tell from the vivid colors), bubbly, and tasted very very sweet.

We ordered the Nachos Libres as appetizer. The serving size was large. Even though we knew that we should save some space in our stomach for tacos, we couldn’t help eating all the nachos. Everything–the salsa sauce, avocado and  bean paste–was so fresh. I particularly liked its homemade corn chips, which were thicker and crispier than the usual tortilla chips.

The fish tacos has a serving size of 3 tacos. Each is fully filled with fresh ingredients like lettuce, salsa, mayo, jalapeno, and breaded basa fish. The fish was very fresh and soft. The only problem I had while eating was that it was difficult to wrap each tortilla nicely and eat it courteously without the ingredients falling out.

The quesadilla came with corn chips, guacamole, salsa and sour cream on the side. The tortilla from the  was a bit thicker and floury. The pork was tender and had a smoky flavor to it. It reminded me of the dry pork jerky I had in Taiwan.

At the end, Kev and I couldn’t finish 1/3 of what we ordered so we had to pack the leftovers. The food are a bit pricey there, but reasonable given its portion and quality.

My review: My experience at Los Chilitos was like the macarons. The restaurant doesn’t look fancy itself, but you will be amazed by the quality of the food it serves.
